Call for Public Comment: Revisions to Comprehensive Standards 5 and 7 [6 Sep. 2019]

Before making any substantive changes to its Comprehensive Standards and Criteria, it is ACAOM’s long-standing practice to provide notice to all relevant stakeholders and constituencies (“interested parties”) of proposed changes; give the interested parties adequate opportunity to comment on the proposed changes; and use the input received to help inform proposed changes.
At its August 2019 meeting the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (“ACAOM” or “Commission”) considered modifications to Criterion 5.08, 7.02 and 7.05 of its Comprehensive Standards and Criteria (“Standards”), as follows; italic and underline indicates added/modified text;

STANDARD 5: ADMISSIONS, criterion 5.08: Doctorate Degree Completion Students, subcomponent C:
The program must complete a comprehensive transcript analysis that demonstrates that all applicable master’s-level coursework completed is equivalent to published Professional Doctorate (PD) program degree requirements in terms of content, rigor, and the attainment of master’s-level professional competencies.

STANDARD 7: PROGRAM OF STUDY, criterion 7.02: Minimum Program Length, Credits and Hours subcomponent F.2 (Chinese herbal medicine certificate programs):
The Chinese herbal medicine certificate program clinical training instruction requirement was corrected to read “210 clock hours of instruction in clinical training, including at least 200 clock hours of instruction in herbal clinical internship training.”
STANDARD 7: PROGRAM OF STUDY, criterion 7.05: Clinical Training, subcomponent E (master’s and PD programs):
The program must ensure that each student fulfills at least 150 hours observing acupuncturists and senior student interns performing AOM therapies in a clinical setting.
A majority (greater than 50%) of the clinical observation experience must include patient diagnosis and/or treatment performed by experienced practitioners At least 60 clock of hours clinical observation must include patient diagnosis and treatment performed exclusively by experienced practitioners that have all necessary state authority to perform the AOM therapies and associated faculty duties.

Comments must be received no later than 4:30pm US Central Time on 7 October 2019. Comments must be limited to the proposed change; comments that do not pertain specifically to the proposed change will not be considered at this time.
