What is Accreditation?

Upcoming Commission Meetings

The Commission holds major meetings twice per year, in February and August; during these meetings, the Commission reviews and takes action on a number of items, including periodic comprehensive evaluations, progress reports, and substantive change applications.  Please note that the Commission takes action on various items throughout the course of the year. and is not limited to taking action during its major meetings. 

Future semi-annual meetings are scheduled for the following dates [as of December 2022]:

  • February 23-25, 2023
  • August 7-9, 2023
  • February 21-24, 2024
  • August 7-10, 2024

The Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (ACAHM)* is a specialized accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE). ACAHM is a 501 (c) (3) not for profit corporation, incorporated in the District of Columbia. National, regional, and specialized accreditors are reviewed by the USDE to ensure that the accrediting body meets specific standards established by Congress. The Secretary of Education is charged with review of accrediting bodies and providing recognition to those accrediting agencies that meet the Secretary of Education’s criteria. ACAHM’s scope of recognition from the USDE is:


“…the accreditation and pre-accreditation (“Candidacy”) of professional non-degree and graduate degree programs, including professional doctoral programs, in the field of acupuncture and/or Oriental medicine, as well as freestanding institutions and colleges of acupuncture and/or Oriental medicine that offer such programs, including programs offered via distance education.”
