The ensō is perhaps the most common subject of Zen calligraphy. It symbolizes enlightenment, power, and the universe itself. It is a direct expression of thusness or this-moment-as-it-is. Throughout the ages and in widely differing cultures, from Stone Age communities to technologically advanced societies, the circle has always evoked feelings of calm and completeness.[1]
On a social level, the ensō circle can be seen to symbolize harmonious cooperation between one another, acceptance of oneself, or the pursuit of personal development and self-improvement.[2]
